What is a Metal Catalytic Converter?

A metal catalytic converter is an advanced emission control device designed to reduce toxic exhaust gases from gasoline engines. It features a stainless steel foil or honeycomb structure that provides fast light-off, excellent heat resistance, and superior durability—making it ideal for motorcycles, small passenger vehicles, and performance cars.

How Does It Work?

The metal substrate is coated with precious metals such as platinum (Pt), palladium (Pd), and rhodium (Rh). As exhaust gases pass through the converter, these materials trigger chemical reactions that convert carbon monoxide (CO), hydrocarbons (HC), and nitrogen oxides (NOx) into carbon dioxide (CO₂), water vapor (H₂O), and nitrogen (N₂), reducing pollution and helping meet emission standards.

Main reactions include:

1. Carbon monoxide (CO) to carbon dioxide (CO₂):
     2CO + O₂ → 2CO₂

2. Hydrocarbons (HC) to carbon dioxide and water:
     CxHy + (x + y/4)O₂ → xCO₂ + (y/2)H₂O
   

3. Nitrogen oxides (NOx) to nitrogen and oxygen:
     2NO → N₂ + O₂
     2NO₂ → N₂ + 2O₂
